UPPSALA Reports: Strengthening Pharmacovigilance Systems in Resource-Limited Countries

Strengthening pharmacovigilance systems in resource-limited countries marks a critical advancement for managing the safety of poverty-related disease (PRD) treatments. The PAVIA project, implemented across countries like Ethiopia, Nigeria, and Tanzania, offers a strategic model for enhancing pharmacovigilance. By fostering collaboration between national regulatory authorities, public health programs, and research institutes, PAVIA establishes a framework for monitoring new PRD treatments safely and effectively in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs).

This article examines the PAVIA model’s impact on safety monitoring, highlighting essential strategies like active drug safety monitoring, digital tools, and training for healthcare workers. For healthcare stakeholders, adopting similar models ensures robust pharmacovigilance practices that safeguard patient health and strengthen regulatory capacity in challenging healthcare environments.
